A Sense of Calm: Sarah Solis’ Malibu Home
Overview
In a quiet pocket of Malibu, interior designer Sarah Solis has created a home that feels deeply personal. Layered with history, grounded in natural materials, and softened by a sense of calm, the house reflects her warm, collected approach to design. Recently featured on The Luxury Home Show, it’s the kind of space that makes you want to slow down and stay a while.

The house, which took over four years to renovate, is shaped by Sarah’s philosophy: design should be comfortable, soulful, and connected to nature. From the start, she avoided predictable finishes in favour of pieces with patina and character.
The entry sets the tone with reclaimed Belgian blue stone underfoot, paired with a primitive Welsh bench and a weathered Swedish console layered in old glass and sterling.
In the formal living room, antique and contemporary elements sit together with ease. A salvaged limestone mantel from the south of France, a piano passed down through her family, and a chair once owned by her grandmother all carry meaning. Most of the furniture is from her own line, Gallery Solis, designed to complement antiques without overpowering them. “I wanted the pieces to feel grounded, not too modern, not too precious,” she explains.
The dining room continues that theme. A Pierre Jeanneret chair, a Charles Dudouyt buffet in raw white oak, and a Swedish barrel chair stripped back to reveal its grain all nod to a sense of rustic refinement. A vintage Murano glass chandelier hangs above her Story Table, balancing sculptural form with soft plaster walls. “I’ve always been obsessed with Murano,” she says. “It adds a quiet glow without shouting.”
In the kitchen, slabs of Calacatta Viola marble wrap the counters and backsplash, forming a rich, tonal contrast to the natural white plaster. Brass hardware from France and a soft butcher block island round out the palette. “I wanted the marble to shine on its own,” Sarah says. “So everything else stayed calm.”
The library is one of her favourite spaces. Wrapped in white oak millwork, it feels analog and meditative. Built-in shelving houses real books collected over decades, art, fiction, and children’s stories passed down from her grandmother. A down-filled daybed sits under the window, offering a place to read or simply watch the bunnies in the garden.
Upstairs, the primary suite continues the soft, quiet mood. A mural by artist James Moy, inspired by the Malibu hillside, wraps the bedroom in a monochromatic landscape. Custom furniture from her collection, a silk rug underfoot, and small details like a vintage Cartier clock all add to the sense of ritual and rest. The bathroom features a creamy Italian marble vanity with a leathered finish, Waterworks brass fixtures, and subtle white zellige tile that brings texture without distraction.
Outside, the same care carries through. The shape of the pool was preserved, but decking was replaced with native fescue for a softer, low-maintenance feel. A pizza oven and smoker sit near an outdoor kitchen, woven furniture offers shaded seating, and a long firepit path leads through olive trees and flowering wisteria. There’s even a bocce court, a chicken coop, and a rope swing salvaged from their previous home.
For Sarah, who began her design career straight out of school before detouring into fashion, this house is a full-circle moment. It’s a space filled with intention but free of pretence. A place where you can see the story of her family and her work in every corner.
