Ewing believes a home begins with its approach. “The entrance is very often forgotten. Usually the digger driver does it,” he notes. At this Beaconsfield home, he gave it full attention. Bespoke pillars echo the chimney design, cobbles line the drive, and locally sourced Donegal stone grounds the scene in authenticity. The outcome is a welcome defined by quiet elegance and timeless appeal
From the street, the house presents a classical façade. Molded eaves, plaster window surrounds, and a string course create rhythm, while a Brazilian slate roof adds soft green warmth to the formality. The symmetry of the main house is offset by a secondary wing and a garage styled like a coach house.
Step inside, and the architecture shifts tone. A double-height entrance hall with hand-blown Czech glass pendants sets a dramatic note. Timber floors and a contemporary open-tread staircase reinterpret tradition with modern clarity. “We wanted a little bit of drama,” Ewing explains, “but also a circulation route that connects everything.”
The heart of the home is the open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space. A four-meter island in Calacatta marble dominates the kitchen, its scale fitting the room’s soaring volume. Handleless cabinetry by Goodwood Interiors conceals appliances and storage, while a hidden pantry ensures the mess of everyday cooking can be tucked away. “It was important that we could make a mess, close it up, and have everything look clean,” says Ewing.
A marble fireplace with a slate inlay anchors the living area. Beside it, a supersized dining table crafted by a German artisan commands attention, paired with a chandelier by Flos that casts warm, precise light. It strikes a balance of confidence and warmth, allowing the space to shift easily between family dinners and larger gatherings.
Ewing extended the home’s symmetry into the landscape. The garden is designed as a progression of outdoor rooms, with terraces leading down to the lawns and greenhouse.
“The center line runs from the gravel path through the island and pool, all the way to the greenhouse,” Ewing says. The exacting axis unites architecture and landscape in a rhythm both deliberate and refined.
An outdoor lounge with a limestone fireplace, timber ceiling, and pizza oven makes the space as functional in winter as in summer. Integrated lighting and sound extend the home’s entertainment possibilities. Estate railings and herringbone paving echo the detailing inside, creating a seamless flow between interior and exterior living.
Upstairs, the principal suite reflects Ewing’s philosophy of proportion and restraint. Oak joinery, soft lighting, and neutral tones bring calm, while Emma, one of the clients, drew inspiration from her Danish heritage to infuse the interiors with Scandinavian simplicity.
The bathroom, modeled after the Beaverbrook Hotel, combines marble floors, a sculptural tub, and a generous walk-in shower.
Other private spaces balance beauty and function. Children’s bedrooms are filled with natural light and soaring ceilings, while a centrally placed laundry underscores Ewing’s focus on efficiency. Above the garage, a guest suite offers independence, complete with its own kitchen and living room, making it ideal for extended family or visitors.
Throughout the house, the architecture marries classical detailing with contemporary performance. Locally sourced stone, salvaged materials, and bespoke joinery lend character and authenticity.
Contemporary details such as concealed storage, black-framed windows, and an open-plan layout, ensure the home functions seamlessly for everyday life.
Ewing’s Beaconsfield project is more than a statement of neoclassical design. It is a home carefully shaped for a family, rooted in craftsmanship, and planned for longevity. By combining architectural discipline with human comfort, he has created a house that will endure both in structure and in spirit.
