Inside a 6,000 Sq. Ft. Central London Apartment by Elicyon Design Studio

Overview

In a central London setting with generous proportions and rare park-facing views, Charu Gandhi introduces a classical style home designed for modern living. “The design vision for the project was to capture a sense of classical sophistication, but then layer in a contemporary elegance,” she explains. Spanning 6,000 square feet across two floors, the apartment is well laid out, with materials, proportions, and details working together with ease.

A Formal Living Room Structured by Light and Proportion

The main living room stands out for its length and ceiling height, something often found in traditional London buildings. Fireplaces sit at either end, with columns adding structure to the space. “It’s very light and bright, but we’ve brought in texture and detail and interest,” Charu notes, referencing the layered panelling of paint, wallpaper, beading, and metal trim. Two seating areas divide the room, one more formal and suited for conversation, the other more relaxed, with a 100-inch TV hidden behind a sliding artwork panel. Above, statement chandeliers draw the eye upward, while a mix of bespoke furniture and the client’s existing pieces adds warmth and personality.

Material Language and Subtle Contrast

Materials play an important role throughout the home. Warm timbers, onyx surfaces, and soft fabrics are combined in a way that feels natural rather than overdone. “We don’t stick to a very limited palette, especially in a project where you have a larger space,” Charu explains. From custom side tables to a large onyx coffee table, each piece has been chosen to suit both the look and function of the room.

A Corridor That Establishes the Vibe

The corridor is more than just a walkway. Panelling along the walls adds structure, while a soft, watercolour-style wallpaper brings movement and interest. “The panelling creates a sort of momentum and rhythm to the space,” Charu notes. Small pauses along the way help guide you naturally from one room to the next.

A Kitchen Characterised by Scale and Craft

The kitchen is open and welcoming, shaped by a mezzanine above and a double-height dining area beyond. A large island with ribbed timber detailing sits at the center, paired with an onyx backsplash and durable work surfaces. “You’re creating a home that looks beautiful, but we do think about durability quite a lot,” Charu says. The dining space is defined by a custom rug and table, with subtle colour links connecting it back to the rest of the home. Above, a mezzanine study creates a relaxed area for work or quiet time, making the space feel flexible and practical.

Powder Rooms with Personality

The two powder rooms each have their own look. One is darker and more masculine, while the other is softer and more decorative. “Powder rooms are a really fun opportunity to do something a little bit more playful,” Charu shares. Both spaces stand out with their layered materials and well-crafted features.

The Principal Suite as a Study in Symmetry

The principal suite is designed as a calm and comfortable space. It includes two dressing areas and a striking bathroom finished with onyx and soft ombré tones. “It’s got lots of depth and elegance to it, but it’s also quite playful,” Charu says. Technology is carefully integrated throughout the space to support everyday use without disrupting the design. In the bathroom, a television is built into the shower area, allowing the client to watch while getting ready, while lighting is layered to highlight key features such as the backlit onyx surfaces. In the bedroom itself, a large TV is concealed behind a decorative panel, maintaining a clean and uncluttered look when not in use. These elements reflect a consistent approach across the home, where modern technology is present but kept discreet, ensuring the space remains calm, refined, and focused on comfort.

Architectural Continuity Through the Staircase

The staircase and lobby bring the two floors together through consistent materials and finishes. Marble flooring becomes a feature itself, while silk wall finishes and mirrored panels reflect light around the space. “We enjoy bringing different materials together so the floor becomes a point of interest,” Charu explains, highlighting these details that help the home feel connected from top to bottom.

Bedrooms Designed with Their Own Character

Each bedroom upstairs has been designed to suit its size and purpose. One room uses darker tones and fitted joinery to create a more enclosed, cosy feel. “We wanted to play up that contrast,” Charu says. Other rooms are lighter, with soft colours and built-in storage that make the most of the space. While each room is different, they all feel part of the same overall design.

A Cohesive Vision, Layered Over Time

Throughout the home, classic details and modern touches come together in a simple and thoughtful way. Technology is integrated but never dominant, materials are expressive but controlled, and spaces are designed to adapt with their occupants. As Charu explains, the aim is always to create a home that feels curated rather than complete, one that gains character over time while maintaining a clear architectural identity.
