Inside a Scandi-Inspired Milton Keynes Home with a 9-Metre Atrium
Overview
Set among mature maple and oak trees on the former grounds of Stokes Cottage in Milton Keynes, Oak House offers a striking alternative to the typical British new build. Developed by Riley Homes with Pledger Architects, the property was designed around three core principles: comfort, longevity and ease of living. “The result is a bold and contemporary home where the architecture, materials and technology blend together” says Tim.

From the electric gates and expansive driveway to the soft white render, timber and bespoke aluminium cladding, the exterior immediately establishes a confident architectural identity.

An Entrance with an Impact
Inside, a dramatic nine-metre-high atrium with a vaulted ceiling, concealed lighting and an open oak staircase with glass balustrades welcomes you. Tim describes the space as “beautifully crafted”, referring to the Scandinavian influence evident throughout the interiors. The transparent balustrades help preserve the openness of the atrium, while carefully positioned lighting guides the eye through the home and towards its main living spaces.

The Heart of the Living Space
At the centre of the house, the open-plan kitchen combines generous proportions with a deliberately restrained palette. A substantial island is finished with Taj Mahal worktops, while dual-tone cabinetry by Willow Kitchen and Interiors pairs a soft mushroom tone with darker wood. Three-metre-high glazed doors flood the space with light and reinforce its connection to the garden. “The key to any open plan kitchen is no clutter” says Tim, with a hidden pantry, integrated appliances and dedicated coffee/bar station helping keep the space streamlined.

Entertaining Inside and Out
The kitchen flows naturally into the dining and lounge areas, with large-format 1.2-metre floor tiles continuing effortlessly towards the outside. Instead of overcrowding the room with oversized furniture, the dining area has been kept sleek. The adjoining lounge offers a more relaxed setting for everyday family living, while the enormous glass doors allows the interior to expand into the garden when entertaining. “You can open up these doors to create a wonderful connection” Tim says.

A Natural Extension of the Home
The wraparound patio extends the home’s living space outdoors, while the landscaped garden combines a broad, level lawn with a more mature wooded section featuring oak and maple trees and an apple orchard. A robotic mower adds to the home’s emphasis on ease of living, while planning permission has already been arranged for a potential future outbuilding. “If this needs to grow with you, you’ve got the capabilities for this to grow with you” says Tim, highlighting the home’s focus on longevity and adaptability.

Flexible Spaces for Modern Living
Away from the main living areas, Oak House offers several rooms that can evolve with its future owners. A more formal living room features a log burner and generous natural light, while two additional reception rooms are currently presented as an office and library. They could equally become a playroom, games room or additional living space, with direct patio access and an adjoining ensuite creating the possibility of a more self-contained area for guests, a nanny or a relative.

Private Spaces Upstairs
The feel of openness continues upstairs, where the floating oak staircase leads into a remarkably open landing beneath the vaulted ceiling.

The first ensuite bedroom features a dressing area, vanity and Juliet balcony, while its generous bathroom introduces a spa-like atmosphere through porcelain tiles, benches and carefully positioned lighting. Even here, flexibility remains central, with the bathroom capable of being adapted into a private steam room.

Two further bedrooms provide generous space, abundant natural light and views towards the mature trees, with Juliet balcony doors adding to their connection with the outdoors. One of the rooms benefits from the dramatic volume created by the vaulted ceiling, while the family bathroom serves both bedrooms with twin sinks, an LED mirror, walk-in shower and separate bath, creating a practical yet beautifully finished space for everyday family life.

The Principal Bedroom
The principal suite takes the home’s luxury feel further, with cabinetry matching the kitchen, a travertine-clad bathroom, twin sinks, a large walk-in shower and a dedicated dressing room. A sliding frosted pocket door separates the dressing area from the bedroom, where the bed sits on its own raised platform with integrated LED lighting. “How inviting? I mean, you’re going to struggle to get out of bed” Tim jokes.

Beyond the bedroom, a private balcony overlooks the mature garden, providing a quieter moment away from the main living spaces.

Technology with Purpose
Technology is integrated throughout Oak House without compromising its architectural character. Solar panels, a Tesla battery, air-source heat pumps and solar-control glass contribute to the home’s energy efficiency, while an MVHR system brings fresh air into the property. A smart lighting system allows different moods to be created throughout the house, while fingerprint entry and a whole-home intercom add further convenience. Here, technology is not simply an addition but is key in making the house more comfortable to live in.
