Sophie Paterson’s Luxury Family Home in Surrey Now on the Market
Overview
Designed by Sophie Patterson Interiors, the home began as little more than a structure and a building site when it was acquired over a decade ago. For Sophie Patterson, it was “the absolute dream,” offering a rare opportunity to shape not just the interiors but the architectural language itself. She revisited important components from the beginning, such as the now-iconic cleaver stone staircase, substituting a much lighter, more classical style for a more stiff, confined one. It creates a sophisticated and intensely personal design language by marrying tradition with diversity.

The Art of Ambient Design
The sitting room, renovated while her husband was away golfing, brims with the sophisticated confidence of a classic design. “I created some paneling to give it that raised, period look,” Sophie explains. With layered moldings and limewash plaster, the walls exude the patina of history. “It almost looks like a smoker’s been living here for 40 years,” she laughs. “I love that tea-stained look, it gives this aged feel as if it’s been here forever.” The home’s classical detailing, which is softened by light, limewash, and life, never feels stiff, instead, it conveys a vibe of reverence and wit.
A Kitchen for Living
“This room really sold the house to me,” Sophie admits. “Even when it was all concrete, I just thought—this is the dream.” It is now a social hub that combines the hustle and bustle of the family with the serene vibe of its architecture. “We are a very sociable family,” she says. “We have a lot of dinner parties, and it’s lovely that the kids can be in the sitting area while we cook.” The kitchen feels practical and theatrical thanks to the rough lime-plastered walls and carefully planned lighting that Sophie came up with during one of her “pregnancy renovations”. “Lighting really makes your interior” she insists, a notion evident in every glow and shadow.
Quiet Corners of Character
Even the functional spaces carry Sophie’s signature. “Our utility has double washers and dryers, a candle cupboard, even an integrated nappy bin,” she lists, with satisfaction in her tone. Each element, from polished metals to layered textures and antique woods, bridges beauty and practicality. “It’s not always as neat as I’d like” she admits, “but design is about rhythm, not perfection.” From LED-lit cupboards with liquid metal doors to the rustic charm of the TV room (“It’s the cosiest room, it just gives you a hug”), every corner carries her refined eclecticism, Cotswold cottage charm met with quiet luxury.
Antiques & Heritage
Patterson’s love of antiques brings depth and balance to the symmetry of her new build. “Living in a new home, I didn’t want it to feel too… ‘McMansion,’” she laughs. The Louis Vuitton trunk in her husband’s Scottish-inspired study exemplifies elegance. “It’s one of my favourite finds” she says. Even the ‘books’ on display are tongue-in-cheek: “They’re all fake,” Sophie confesses. “It’s about the aesthetic, and sometimes that means getting creative.”
The Personal Sanctuary
The bedroom upstairs is an example of elegant uncompromising style. “People think I’m all neutrals,” she says, “but I’m not scared of colour.” The deep burgundy wallpaper from her own collection anchors the space, while pale linens and soft furnishings create contrast. “If you’re afraid of dark colours, balance them with light pieces, it changes everything.” Her knack for functional elegance is evident in the adjacent bathroom, which combines vinyl wall coverings with book-matched Calacatta marble. “I didn’t want it to feel cold” she says. “It’s about warmth, even in a space full of stone.”
Spaces That Work for Family
In the gym, “off the bedroom, but not smelling of rubber,” she jokes, natural fibers and pared-back elegance make exercise feel inviting. The dressing room, meanwhile, feels deeply personal. “Every day, I feel so lucky to have this space,” Sophie says. Embroidered silk wallpaper and layered accessories embody her philosophy: “Without accessories, a house doesn’t feel like a home.” From Addison Ross frames to custom bins, each element reflects beauty and intention. “Even the bin should be beautiful” she quips.
A Home with Heart
Her children’s rooms give charm and longevity. “When you have kids, you realise how quickly they grow up,” Sophie notes. Ava’s self-designed wallpaper teeming with animals she handpicked, sits alongside practical motifs borrowed from her mother’s own dressing room. “She’s my toughest client,” Sophie laughs. The guest room, by contrast, exudes serenity through grasscloth textures and silken screens inspired by nature. “I’m very inspired by the outdoors,” she says. “Bringing that in makes a space feel grounded.”
The Designer’s Reflection
Across every room, The home reveals layers of heritage, humour, and compassion. The style feels lived-in yet elevated, architectural yet personal. “Designing your own home means experimenting,” she muses. “Some things work; some you learn from, but that’s what makes it real.” It’s that honesty, paired with a refined, narrative-led aesthetic, that makes this home more than a showcase of interiors. It’s a portrait of a designer who truly lives her work.
