“From the moment we saw it, we knew it was special,” Laura shares. “It had been in the same family for over fifty years. We felt very lucky to become its next caretakers.”
Heritage and Harmony
At the heart of the home is a new extension that bridges past and present. Arched windows frame garden views, while soft, natural hues and textural materials like brass, wood, and marble create tranquility. “I wanted it to feel authentic, like it had always been part of the house,” Laura says. The result is an open-plan kitchen, dining, and family area that glows with light and comfort.
The kitchen features understated cabinetry in earthy tones, marble worktops from Italy, and a hidden butler’s pantry. It reflects Laura’s belief that beauty and function can exist in harmony. “I design kitchens like art pieces,” she explains. “Everything has a purpose, but it should also bring joy.”
A Life Inspired by Nature
Laura’s love of nature flows through every space. From the handcrafted joinery in the pantry to the lush gardens filled with figs, plums, and flowers, nature is both muse and material. It also inspired Grove England, her fine fragrance and home brand created at the farmhouse. “The fragrances are inspired by the changing seasons and the flowers we grow,” she says.
A Home That Breathes
Throughout the house, Laura honors its layered history by keeping the original staircase and beams and restoring Victorian details. Her palette of muted greens, leathers, and soft pinks connects each room in a seamless flow of peace.
In the main bedroom, Liberty fabrics and wool carpets invite rest, while the adjoining bathroom and dressing area echo the arched motifs found downstairs.
Living the Story
For Laura and her husband Patrick, the renovation has been a journey of respect for the building’s history and the slower rhythm of country living. “We’ve worked hard to preserve what was here while creating a home that truly reflects who we are,” she says. “It’s not about perfection; it’s about feeling at peace.”
From the hum of the kitchen to the quiet of her studio, Laura Butler-Madden’s Cotswold home stands as a living expression of her design philosophy: natural, timeless, and full of heart.
