The architecture follows the philosophy of JH2 architect June Her, who explains that the design sought to reinterpret a classic style for modern life. “We picked Mediterranean architecture style. It’s classic, but we had to tweak it with the modern lifestyle,” she notes, pointing out the challenge to combine tradition with contemporary needs.

A Serene Mediterranean Courtyard

After walking under a restrained archway, guests enter a peaceful garden that changes the atmosphere from public to private right away. Ariana describes the experience as a gradual transition away from everyday life. “As you enter here, you feel immediately relaxed,” she says, highlighting the shaded seating areas, gentle water feature and lush bamboo plantings that create a spa-like atmosphere. The courtyard introduces the home’s layered spatial idea by connecting the main entrance, the formal living spaces, and the guest casita into a single architectural composition.

The Home’s Signature Foyer

Inside, a dramatic double-height foyer establishes the elegance and warmth of the residence. Natural daylight fills the entry through expansive steel-framed openings, while a statement light fixture draws the eye upward. Ariana notes the clarity of the interior flow from this point, explaining that the design encourages movement through the home toward the formal dining room and beyond to the outdoor spaces. The sequence unfolds with effortless grandeur, guiding visitors naturally through the home.

A Pool-Centred Outdoor Landscape

Unlike traditional homes where the pool simply occupies the backyard, here water becomes the defining landscape element. Ariana observes, “Unlike many homes that have a swimming pool in the backyard, the swimming pool sort of is the backyard.” The infinity-edge pool wraps around the home, creating visual and physical connections to key interior rooms including the kitchen, dining area and living spaces. Layered with lounging areas, spa zones and floating pathways, the pool transforms the outdoor environment into a social and architectural centerpiece.

Living in Harmony with the Outdoors

The home’s architecture deliberately blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. June Her explains that the massing was elongated to follow the shape of the site while allowing courtyards and outdoor areas to bring light and ocean breezes deep into the home. “The sequence of connected volumes allows outdoor space and indoor space to create natural lighting for individual interior space,” she says. Folding glass doors and open-air dining areas further adds this fluid connection, creating spaces that feel equally suited to entertaining or everyday living.

A Kitchen Framed by Nature

At the heart of the home lies a striking kitchen where natural materials take centre stage. A large island clad in polished Calacatta Gold marble anchors the space, with a sculptural sink carved directly into the stone. Ariana is particularly captivated by the way the room engages with the outdoors. “I can imagine standing here and cooking dinner and just enjoying this view,” she says, noting how the pool and surrounding greenery appear repeatedly through the windows, surrounding the space with the landscape of Newport Coast.

Living Spaces Designed as a Gallery

The interior design lets the building and landscape take center stage instead of heavily depending on ornamental accents. June Her explains that the team devoted more attention to form and spatial experience than to decorative finishes. “The best interior decoration is nature,” she says, describing how windows frame views like artworks within a gallery. The living areas, which have marble floors, tiered ceilings, and thoughtfully framed views that let light and greenery fill the spaces, are clear examples of this idea.

A Staircase That Becomes Sculpture

One of the home’s most memorable features is its sweeping staircase. The interior’s otherwise rigid geometry gains movement and softness from the curving form. Ariana reflects on its quiet elegance, remarking that “the curvature of this staircase is such sophisticated yet subtle design. What starts as architecture ends in light.” Crafted from natural stone with delicate iron railings that echo the courtyard detailing, the staircase functions as a passage and a sculpture.

The Primary Suite Sanctuary

Upstairs, the primary suite is positioned at the rear of the home to maximise privacy and views. Skylights illuminate the entryway, while expansive doors open to a wraparound terrace overlooking the pool, landscaped gardens and distant hillsides.

Guest Spaces and Independent Living

Additional bedrooms continue the theme of light, terraces and outdoor connections, offering private balconies and courtyard views.

The residence reflects June Her’s belief that simplicity often emerges from careful complexity. “I believe as an architect the simple is the best, but to make simple is really challenging,” she says. The home achieves an effortless sophistication, thoughtfully composed to capture the essence of modern Mediterranean living on the Newport Coast.
