Touring MDD Homes’ Industrial Ranch House in San Diego
Overview
Set within the natural beauty of Santa Fe Valley, this latest residence by McCullough Design Development marks a debut for the team in the region. Introduced by Matt as “the most expensive and most luxurious model that they’ve ever built,” the Industrial Ranch House presents itself with authority. A sweeping driveway, extensive parking, and a detached accessory dwelling unit give the property ample space and freedom, while the single-level layout shows a home built to last. “One of the cool things about this home is it’s all on a single level,” Matt notes, positioning it as a residence equally suited to entertaining and everyday ease.

An Entrance Orchestrated for Impact
The entry is orchestrated with precision. An oversized black pivot door opens to a wide corridor where European-style brick flooring introduces texture underfoot, guiding the eye forward. The architecture doesn’t let anything else get in the way of the view beyond. A five-to-six-foot passage lets the movement flow into the big room, where interior and exterior dissolve into one continuous experience. It is, as Matt describes, “all about that view,” a deliberate alignment that creates the home’s main story of openness and connection.
The Great Room and Entertaining Core
The great room unfolds beneath non-structural steel trusses, a nod to the industrial slang that makes the house what it is. Here, ceiling heights rise from ten to twelve feet, amplifying volume without going over. At its centre, a quartzite island glows with programmable backlighting, affixing a kitchen designed as a workspace and a social hub. Symmetry governs the layout, aligning cooking, dining, and living zones to maintain visual and social continuity, while a glass-fronted wine wall replaces the traditional cellar with a more contemporary expression of display and access.
An Interior Extended into Landscape
A 32-foot sliding glass wall dissolves the boundary between the interior and exterior, revealing a fully realised outdoor living environment. Flooring continues uninterrupted, while an outdoor kitchen mirrors the interior’s materiality and function. “You wouldn’t really know if you are inside or out,” Matt observes, capturing the essence of Southern California living. Outside, an infinity pool extends toward the horizon, its integrated spa and Baja shelf offering leisure and accessibility. Seated beneath adjustable awnings, Summer reflects on the atmosphere: “It does make me visualize just sitting here… enjoying that view.” It’s a place that’s set up for both spectacle and quiet moments.
Recreation and the Landscape Beyond
The gardens were designed to add to the home’s lifestyle amenities. A multi-use sports court supports both basketball and pickleball, while dual putting greens introduce a slower rhythm of recreation. “This is what it’s all about,” Matt remarks, gesturing to the harmony between activity and the setting. The positioning of these amenities, alongside landscaped gardens and open views, highlights a design perspective prioritizing wellness and engagement with the outdoors.
A More Intimate Retreat
The tone of the living spaces changes back inside. The main lounge remains open and connected, while a separate snug offers a more enclosed, cinematic experience. “Oh, that is comfy. I might not be getting up straight away,” Summer notes, settling into the leather seating. The room’s darker palette and soft lighting create contrast to the brightness of the great room, reflecting a broader progression in design priorities where dedicated media spaces replace more traditional games rooms.
The Primary Suite and Wellness Living
The primary suite occupies its own wing, designed as a private sanctuary that extends into a secluded outdoor spa. Designed by Lori McCullough, the interiors layer warm tones, natural materials, and indirect lighting to create what she describes as a more “romantic” and relaxing environment. The bathroom centres on a sculptural concrete tub, immovable once placed, and a beautiful walk-in shower designed for accessibility. From here, the suite flows outward to a private courtyard, highlighting the home’s dedication to indoor-outdoor continuity and personal wellbeing.
Technology, and the Future of Living
Beneath its architectural elegance lies a well-thoughtout technological framework. A Crestron system integrates lighting, climate, and security, while solar panels and Tesla Powerwalls support energy independence. Functionality is increased with a hidden pantry and backup prep kitchen, which reflects an increasing focus on useful luxury.
The property’s versatility is further increased by the separate ADU, which provides a fully furnished living area that complements changing multigenerational and flexible living trends.
A Model for Modern California Living
Ultimately, the Industrial Ranch House is more of a model for modern California living than a unique home. As Monty McCullough explains, the process invites clients to engage directly: “Take a shopping cart and just tell us everything you like.” It is a collaborative vision, moulded by decades of experience and a clear understanding of value. Here in Santa Fe Valley, that vision is realised through architecture that is expansive, precise, technological, tactile, and always attuned to the demands of modern living.
